Meet Maureen Austin, CHIRP Executive Director

mo's mugMaureen Austin’s passion is winged wildlife in the garden...

She is the founder and executive director of CHIRP for Garden Wildlife, Inc. (The Center to Help Instill Respect & Preservation for Garden Wildlife), a non-profit educational corporation dedicated to helping people create garden habitats for hummingbirds, butterflies and songbirds.

Expanding beyond her own backyard, she successfully motivated her hometown community of Alpine, California to become the First Community Habitat in the United States--certified by the National Wildlife Federation. The project is known as "Sage & Songbirds."

She has received numerous awards for her work, including the National Wildlife Federation’s Annual Conservation Achievement Award in Education.

Maureen leads by example. Her own garden is recognized by the National Wildlife Federation as both a Certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat, and San Diego County's first Certified Schoolyard Habitat. It is also certified by Monarch Watch as an Official Monarch Butterfly Waystation.

It has been featured in various magazines and newspapers, and was a featured garden in the 2008 Sage & Songbirds Garden Tour.

Her garden has won GARDEN OF THE YEAR awards, both nationally--(FLOWER & GARDEN Magazine) and regionally--(SAN DIEGO HOME/GARDEN Magazine).

Maureen spent 8 years as an award-winning journalist for both magazines and newspapers, until she became a mother. It was then, in 1984, that she began a home-based venture of growing and teaching about herbs and habitat gardening.

She continues to write and lecture, and would love to share her passion with your organization. To contact her, please email or phone (619) 445-8352.
